This SKILLs session will explore the role of imaging in musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, with an emphasis on osteoarthritis. We will review when imaging is clinically appropriate, reinforcing the principle that imaging should be requested only when it is likely to change management, rather than for reassurance alone.
In this session, we will:
- Identify when MSK imaging is appropriate by applying red flags, clinical presentation, and likely impact on management.
- Select the most appropriate imaging modality (X‑ray, MRI, ultrasound, CT) based on the clinical question and suspected pathology.
- Apply evidence‑based guidelines and decision tools to support safe, effective imaging requests and avoid unnecessary investigations.
- Analyse real‑world MSK case examples to justify imaging decisions and explain them clearly to patients.
