This session will focus on identifying good practice when supporting patients to understand and manage conditions that require drug therapy. We will hear from 3 nurses regarding their research and experience working with patients to support drug adherence and the foundations required to do this effectively.

- Understanding the evidence base for patient education and how to implement evidence into practice
- Identifying good practice in patient education around drug treatment
- Demonstrating the need for shared decision making
Mwidimi Ndosi will present his work on the systematic review of the research around patient education and share recommendations on implementing patient education in practice.
We will then hear from Julie Begum who will talk about her learnings from introducing DMARD videos initially in Luton and then in other sites in the UK– the drivers that led to the implementation and the benefits and challenges that they have faced.
We will then end the session hearing form Sarah Ryan on the insight gained from a survey into the needs of people commencing methotrexate – the benefits of shared decision making and how to this well in the limited time available.
Julie Begum
Julie is a Cross Site Lead Nurse at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS FT. She completed her MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice in 2023 and is a Non-Medical Independent Prescriber.
Julie is well recognised for her passion for education and supporting nurses new to rheumatology. Her clinical interests include psoriatic arthritis and osteoporosis. She has supported research and QI work with several organisations, including RCN, BSR and NRAS for many years and currently serves on the Brit-PACT Steering Group representing adult nurses and allied health professionals, with a focus on advancing research in psoriatic arthritis. Julie is a regular speaker at national and international events and has co-authored multiple publications.
Sarah Ryan
Sarah is a Professor of Rheumatology Nursing at the Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust. Sarah’s academic interests are focused on patient and health professional education including developing e-learning resources for nurses providing telephone adviceline support. In 2003 Sarah was made a fellow of the Royal College of Nursing and in 2019 was presented with the Droitwich award, from the British Society of Rheumatology. In 2024 Sarah was awarded a NIHR senior research leader role and is developing a clinical academic research academy to support nursing research.
Mwidimi Ndosi
Mwidimi is Professor of Rheumatology and Health Outcomes at the University of the West of England, Bristol. With a clinical background in rheumatology nursing, his work focuses on improving outcomes for people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases through patient education, self-management support and multidisciplinary care. His expertise includes patient-reported outcome measures, health education, health literacy and translating research evidence into clinical practice.
